Myanmar is rich in biodiversity, which provides various resources for the livelihood of the people. Habitat destruction, over-exploitation of natural resources and environmental pollution have been found to be responsible for the loss of a large number of animal and plant species. Recognizing this, the Myanmar Environment Institute tries to introduce a basic training course on the environment and gives awareness to the public.
Key activities of the MEI include
(1) basic training courses for ecology, environmental and Social sciences;
(2) conducting research projects related to ecosystem conservation, biodiversity, climate change risk, environment, river, wetland water and social science.
Objectives
The objectives of the activities are
:: to contribute scientific knowledge, principles, concepts and methodologies,
:: to understand the interrelationships of the physical and biological components of nature,
:: to identify and analyze environmental problems both human-made and natural, and
:: to evaluate the risks associated with these problems and examine alternative solutions for resolving them.
It aims to conserve the ecosystems and biodiversity along with community development, and to empower the community to participate in conservation activities.
